UAE Schools Prep for Ramadan Exams
As the holy month of Ramadan approaches, schools in the UAE are making adjustments to ensure that end-of-year exams conclude before its commencement. This proactive measure aims to prioritize students' time for family and prayer during this significant period, minimizing academic stress and allowing for a peaceful observance of Ramadan.
In preparation for Ramadan, schools across the UAE are taking proactive steps to conclude end-of-year exams before the commencement of the holy month. This decision reflects a commitment to supporting students' well-being and allowing them ample time for family gatherings, prayer, and reflection during this sacred time.
Timing Adjustments for Exams
To accommodate the observance of Ramadan, headteachers are prioritizing the completion of internal exams before its commencement. While the exact dates of Ramadan may vary depending on moon sightings, the anticipated start date in the UAE for this year is March 12. Recognizing the significance of Ramadan in Muslim families, schools aim to minimize assessments during this period, ensuring that students can focus on spiritual activities without the burden of intensive studying.
Nav Iqbal, Principal and CEO of GEMS Metropole School – Motor City, explains that mock examinations for Year 11, 12, and 13 students have been strategically scheduled to avoid coinciding with Ramadan. Additionally, internal assessments for younger students will be completed before the holy month begins, alleviating any additional pressure on students during this time.
Low-Stakes Assessments
During Ramadan, schools prioritize low-stakes assessments to minimize academic pressure on students. Helen Hurford, Vice Principal of GEMS Wellington Academy – Silicon Oasis, emphasizes the importance of supporting students' well-being during Ramadan by minimizing the number of assessments and ensuring they are low-stakes. Assessments are designed to focus on specific topics and are referred to as "Checks for Understanding" to alleviate any anxiety among students.
School Holidays and Examination Schedule
For most international curricula schools, the spring break will coincide with Ramadan, providing students with additional time for rest and reflection. However, for Indian curriculum schools, internal and CBSE Board examinations are currently in progress. Rashmi Nandkeolyar, Principal and Director of Delhi Private School (DPS) Dubai, explains that internal examinations will conclude by March 6, while CBSE Board examinations will end on April 2.
Muhammad Ali Kottakkulam, Principal of Gulf Indian High School, Dubai, highlights that while some exams may fall during Ramadan, schools will ensure they are conducted within the abbreviated working hours observed during the holy month. This ensures that students can balance their academic commitments with their religious observance during Ramadan.
Conclusion
As schools in the UAE prepare for the onset of Ramadan, adjustments to examination schedules are made to prioritize students' well-being and religious observance. By concluding end-of-year exams before Ramadan and prioritizing low-stakes assessments, schools aim to support students in maintaining a balance between their academic responsibilities and spiritual practices during this sacred time.
