Dubai resident Shihab Abdulla embarked on a remarkable two-year quest in 2023: to capture photographs of every landmark depicted on the currency notes of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). His endeavor was fueled by a passion for exploration and photography, driven by the desire to create a comprehensive collection that would encapsulate the diverse landmarks of his country. However, despite his dedication, one landmark remained elusive—the Barakah nuclear plant.

Shihab's quest gained significant attention after Khaleej Times featured his project, drawing the interest of the representatives at the Barakah power plant. Recognizing the unique nature of his endeavor, they extended a personal invitation to assist him in completing his collection. This invitation marked a pivotal moment for Shihab, offering him the opportunity to access a location typically restricted to authorized personnel only.

The Barakah nuclear plant, nestled in Abu Dhabi's Al Dhafra region, stands as a symbol of the UAE's commitment to innovation and progress. Its significance is not only technological but also symbolic, representing the nation's aspirations for a sustainable future powered by clean energy. Securing permission to visit such a highly guarded site was no small feat, requiring months of negotiation and coordination.

Undeterred by the logistical challenges, Shihab embarked on the journey to Barakah, a venture spanning 845 kilometers round trip. The visit, meticulously planned and executed, involved navigating through security protocols and obtaining necessary clearances to document the facility. From the moment he set foot on the premises until his departure late in the evening, Shihab immersed himself in capturing the essence of the nuclear plant.

For Shihab, the experience was not merely about capturing photographs but also about gaining insight into the technological marvel that graces the new Dh1,000 banknote. He marveled at the intricacies of the domed structure, where nuclear reactions occur within carefully engineered confines. The stringent security measures and meticulous maintenance underscored the UAE's commitment to ensuring the safety and efficiency of its nuclear facilities.

With the prized photograph of the Barakah power plant in hand, Shihab achieved a significant milestone in his quest. Completing his collection of all 23 landmarks featured on UAE currency notes was a testament to his perseverance and passion for exploration. Reflecting on his journey, Shihab expressed pride in the project, highlighting the thrill of discovery and the satisfaction of capturing the essence of his homeland.

Beyond his photography project, Shihab leads a life enriched by adventure and curiosity. As a mechanical engineer based in Dubai, he balances his professional responsibilities with his wanderlust, making the most of his limited leisure time. Despite the constraints of a one-day weekend, he seizes every opportunity to explore the diverse landscapes and cultural gems that the UAE has to offer.

Shihab's love for exploration extends beyond personal pursuits; he is also keen to instill a sense of wonder and curiosity in his two-year-old daughter. Despite living in India with her mother, she shares her father's enthusiasm for travel and discovery. As Shihab looks ahead to future adventures with his daughter, he envisions a bond forged through shared experiences and a mutual appreciation for the beauty of the world.

In capturing the essence of the UAE's landmarks through his lens, Shihab not only creates a visual archive but also fosters a deeper connection to his country's heritage and aspirations. His journey serves as an inspiration to all who dare to dream and explore, reminding us that the pursuit of knowledge and discovery knows no bounds.
