UAE Doctors Issue Health Warning on Increased Hospital Visits After Iftar
As Ramadan approaches, doctors in the UAE are cautioning against the dangers of overeating and consuming unhealthy foods during iftar. The surge in hospital visits during Ramadan, particularly due to severe indigestion, has prompted experts to advise on the importance of mindful eating habits.
Dr. Zuhair Alsharafi, Corporate Director of Emergency Services at Burjeel Holdings, highlights the common issue of indigestion resulting from the sudden intake of large quantities of food after fasting for extended hours. He emphasizes that this habit of overeating quickly after iftar can lead to vomiting, reflux, and other digestive discomforts. Most patients seeking medical attention during Ramadan's initial hours suffer from indigestion.
Moreover, patients with pre-existing health conditions, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, renal disease, or those undergoing chemotherapy, are particularly vulnerable. Dr. Alsharafi stresses the importance of consulting doctors before fasting, especially for individuals with chronic illnesses, to avoid severe consequences.
Dr. Zaid Mahdi Mohammed, Head of the Emergency Department at the Canadian Specialist Hospital in Dubai, emphasizes the need for a balanced diet during iftar. He recommends meals rich in carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats while avoiding excessive consumption of rich and fatty foods. Additionally, he advises eating slowly and mindfully to aid digestion and prevent overindulgence.
Overeating during iftar can lead to various health issues, including gastroesophageal reflux disease, stomach stretching, gallbladder attacks, and even acute pancreatitis. Dr. Mohammed advises breaking the fast with light, easily digestible foods and gradually increasing intake over the evening. Proper hydration during non-fasting hours is also crucial to prevent digestive issues and maintain overall well-being.
In conclusion, UAE doctors stress the importance of mindful eating habits during Ramadan to avoid overeating-related health complications. By adopting balanced diets, eating slowly, and staying hydrated, individuals can enjoy a healthier fasting experience while minimizing the risk of hospital visits due to digestive issues.
