UAE announces ban on unlicensed digital platforms teaching holy Quran
The UAE has announced a ban on unlicensed digital platforms teaching the holy Quran, highlighting the need for qualified educators to ensure accurate and appropriate religious education. The General Authority for Islamic Affairs, Endowments, and Zakat issued an advisory to UAE citizens and residents, emphasizing the dangers posed by unlicensed platforms. These unauthorized educators often lack proper religious education credentials, leading to incorrect teachings and potential misinterpretations of Islamic principles.
The advisory stresses that parents should be cautious and report any suspicious or unlicensed teaching activities to the authorities. Engaging with unlicensed educators not only risks severe legal penalties but also exposes parents to the same. UAE law strictly prohibits unlicensed religious education activities, with penalties including imprisonment for at least two months and fines up to Dh50,000.
To teach the Quran legally in the UAE, individuals must meet several conditions. They must be at least 21 years old, of good conduct, and free from any felony or misdemeanour convictions unless rehabilitated. They must also prove their health fitness for the role. Additionally, those managing a centre need practical experience and appropriate qualifications, passing a test and personal interview, and obtaining approval from the competent authorities if not sponsored by the centre.
Establishing a centre for teaching the Quran requires obtaining a license in accordance with the law and meeting specific building requirements. These include technical and health standards, separate classrooms for different genders, appropriate halls for activities, and necessary equipment as specified by the executive regulations.
The advisory is part of the UAE's efforts to protect the younger generation by ensuring the quality and integrity of religious education. By regulating who can teach the Quran, the UAE aims to prevent the spread of unqualified religious education providers and maintain the sanctity and accuracy of Islamic teachings.
