UAE: 3-day weekend announced at some Indian schools
Some Indian schools in Dubai are granted a three-day weekend as the Republic Day coincides with a Friday this year. On January 26, India will observe its 75th Republic Day, marking the adoption of the Constitution on November 26, 1949, which came into effect on January 26, 1950. Various Indian-curriculum schools in the UAE have informed parents that they will be closed on this day, allowing students and staff to celebrate the significant occasion.
Republic Day, a public holiday in India, commemorates the Declaration of Indian Independence by the Indian National Congress on January 26, 1930. The day holds historical significance, symbolizing the adoption of the Constitution and the birth of the Republic of India. Schools typically celebrate with vibrant parades, cultural performances, and various activities to showcase the country's rich heritage.
Mohammed Ali Kottakulam, Principal of Gulf Indian High School Dubai, shared that their school celebrated the 75th Republic Day with pride and reverence, featuring presentations on India's modern history and a patriotic dance by students. The school remained closed on Friday, providing a three-day weekend for the occasion.
Archana Sagar, Principal of Amity School Sharjah, emphasized the significance of Republic Day in connecting students to India's culture, values, and history. Their school celebrated the occasion on Wednesday, January 24, with a patriotic assembly, dance performances, choir singing, and a thought-provoking skit. Amity School Dubai also celebrated Republic Day on Wednesday.
Delhi Private School (DPS) Dubai observed Republic Day with a grand marchpast of almost 4,000 students, hoisting the Indian flag, singing the national anthem, and featuring various performances paying tribute to India's history. Rashmi Nandkeolyar, Principal and Director of DPS Dubai, mentioned that their celebrations took place on Thursday, with the school closed on Friday.
Meanwhile, some institutions in Dubai opted to celebrate Republic Day on the school grounds without granting a day off. The Consul General of India, Satish Kumar Sivan, unfurled the Indian national flag at the Indian High School, Oud Metha campus. Themed "Viksit Bharat Atulya Bharat" (India's development plan by 2047), the event also focused on the "Power of Women" in shaping the nation.
Punit MK Vasu, CEO of The Indian High Group of Schools, highlighted the theme for the celebrations, emphasizing the country's rapid advances and the impact of women. Principals noted that songs, dances, and festooned tableaux portrayed and celebrated nature's influence on the country's traditions.
Deepika Thapar Singh, CEO-Principal of Credence High School, expressed the school's pride and enthusiasm for commemorating Republic Day. They held a special assembly, including a flag-hoisting ceremony and singing of the National Anthem, to instill patriotism and national pride in students while fostering unity and respect for the nation's values.
