Trapped Miners: Turkey Gold Mine Landslide
Rescue efforts are underway in eastern Turkey as nine workers remain trapped under earth following a landslide at a gold mine in the Ilic district of Erzincan province. The interior minister confirmed the incident, stating that four individuals, including the mine's field manager, have been detained for investigation purposes. The mine's operator, SSR Mining, has suspended production after a significant slip on the heap leach pad, leading to a drastic drop in its Toronto-listed shares. Despite the challenges, rescue teams are tirelessly working around the clock to locate the missing miners. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya expressed hope for positive outcomes as search and rescue operations continue. Security footage captured the moment of the landslide, depicting a massive mound of soil collapsing and engulfing the area, raising clouds of dust into the air. The mine, owned by Turkey-based Calik Holding and SSR Mining, has drawn attention to safety concerns in the mining industry. With 1,700 personnel involved in the emergency response, including 339 search and rescue workers, efforts are focused on locating and rescuing the trapped workers as quickly as possible.
