Dutch football sensation Quincy Promes, recently convicted in absentia by an Amsterdam court, has been reportedly apprehended by Dubai authorities upon the request of Dutch prosecutors. The arrest comes after Promes was sentenced to six years in prison for his involvement in cocaine smuggling.

While prosecutors did not explicitly confirm Promes' identity, they disclosed that a 32-year-old individual residing in Moscow was detained in Dubai. Promes, who plays for Spartak Moscow, has rarely been named in Dutch criminal cases due to prosecutors' discretion.

The Amsterdam Public Prosecution office revealed that the arrest was made pursuant to a Red Notice issued by the Netherlands, signaling their intent to seek extradition. Red Notices are global alerts for law enforcement agencies to locate and temporarily detain individuals pending legal action.

Reports suggest that Promes was living luxuriously in Dubai before his arrest, although specific details remain undisclosed to prevent interference with the ongoing investigation. Despite being taken into custody, Promes' recent absence from Spartak's matches in the UAE hints at potential legal entanglements.

Promes, renowned for his stellar performances in 50 international matches for the Netherlands, faced legal setbacks that overshadowed his illustrious career. Convicted of complicity in cocaine trafficking, the Amsterdam District Court concluded that Promes played a significant role in the import and export of substantial cocaine quantities in 2020.

This conviction marks not the first instance of legal trouble for Promes. In a separate incident last year, he was found guilty of stabbing his cousin and was sentenced to 18 months in prison. However, Promes, currently residing in Moscow, opted to skip his trial in Amsterdam, with his legal team asserting his innocence against the charges.

Promes' illustrious football journey, spanning stints with prominent clubs like Ajax and Sevilla, now faces significant uncertainty amid these legal controversies. While his talent on the field once dazzled fans worldwide, his off-field tribulations have cast a shadow over his career, leaving supporters and authorities alike grappling with the implications of his legal battles.
