As the cost of living rises, UAE residents turn to secondhand stores for affordable and sustainable fashion options.

In response to global inflation, many UAE residents are turning to thrifting as a means to cope with rising costs and to embrace sustainability in their fashion choices. Once associated with vintage finds and budget-conscious shopping, secondhand stores are now experiencing a resurgence, driven by the need to stretch dirhams further and a growing appreciation for unique styles and environmental consciousness.

Dubai's old district of Deira is bustling with secondhand clothing shops, colloquially known as Ukay-Ukay, which catered primarily to Filipinos in the past. However, these shops now attract customers from various nationalities, including Russians, Egyptians, Iranians, Indians, Pakistanis, Kenyans, South Africans, and Arabs from Algeria and Tunisia.

Customers like Natasha, a Russian shopper, have found hidden treasures in these secondhand shops, opting for high-brand fashion at affordable prices. Others, like Mercy from Kenya, have taken a more entrepreneurial approach by reselling clothes to fellow Kenyans and sending some back home for resale.

Globally, the used clothing industry is valued at $28 billion, with an expected annual growth rate of 12% through 2026. Recognizing this trend, major department stores are launching dedicated pre-owned sections to cater to the growing demand for secondhand fashion.

Amy, an office worker from the Philippines, shares how thrifting allows her to save money for essentials like food and vitamins in uncertain times. Many customers appreciate the mix of mall pull-outs and secondhand items offered by these thrift shops, which include products from the US, Canada, and Thailand.

Apart from affordability, factors such as sustainability, quality, uniqueness, and a sense of community are driving the popularity of thrifting. Shoppers are increasingly drawn to the idea of giving pre-loved clothes a second life, reducing waste, and embracing a circular economy. Thrifting also offers the opportunity to discover well-made, durable garments and one-of-a-kind pieces that stand out from mainstream fashion.

In Dubai, a city known for luxury shopping malls and high-end brands, the thrifting community is thriving, attracting individuals seeking both fashion-forward pieces and bargain deals. As consumers become more conscious of their environmental impact and prioritize practicality in their fashion choices, the trend of secondhand shopping is expected to continue growing in the UAE.

Through thrifting, residents are not only saving money but also contributing to a more sustainable and inclusive fashion ecosystem, where everyone can find something unique and affordable to wear.
