Sip a Cup of Coffee and Raise Awareness on Multiple Sclerosis

From May 30 to June 2, over 60 cafes across the UAE are participating in a unique initiative by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS). This effort aims to foster community engagement and raise awareness about multiple sclerosis (MS), a chronic autoimmune condition that affects the central nervous system.

As part of the initiative, these cafes will display QR codes linking to informative resources and personal stories of individuals living with MS. Visitors can learn about the condition while enjoying their favorite beverages served in specially branded cups designed by the NMSS.

The NMSS, a UAE-based NGO established in 2022 under the Ministry of Community Development, is dedicated to improving the lives of those affected by MS through education, advocacy, and support for global research efforts to find a cure. This initiative is one of several marking World MS Day on May 30, aimed at enhancing public understanding of MS and promoting solidarity with those affected.

 What is Multiple Sclerosis?

Multiple sclerosis is an unpredictable condition that disrupts the flow of information between the brain and spinal cord. Common symptoms include fatigue, walking difficulties, dizziness, cognitive changes, loss of balance and coordination, mood changes, and spasms. These symptoms can significantly impact daily life, underscoring the importance of public awareness and support.

In the UAE, approximately 19 out of every 100,000 people are affected by MS, with the condition often beginning in young adults around the age of 26. Women are twice as likely as men to develop MS, comprising 67% of those diagnosed in the UAE. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for improving long-term health outcomes. Despite the challenges, ongoing research is focused on developing more effective treatments and ultimately finding a cure.
