Sepsis, a life-threatening condition affecting 49 million people globally and causing 11 million deaths annually, remains inadequately recognized despite its significant impact, warns Dr. Ali Al Shidi, an internal medicine consultant and vice-chair of the Internal Medicine Division at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City in Abu Dhabi. Sepsis occurs when the body's response to an infection becomes detrimental, leading to extreme inflammation, organ dysfunction, tissue damage, and potentially death if left untreated. Notably, it contributes to nearly 20% of all global deaths. Dr. Al Shidi emphasizes that sepsis can result from various infectious diseases, including community-acquired infections like viral pneumonia, the seasonal flu, COVID-19, and hospital-acquired infections caused by antibiotic-resistant superbugs. Recognizing the symptoms of sepsis is crucial, including slurred speech, confusion, reduced interaction, rapid heart rate, extreme shivering, reduced urine output, warm or sweaty skin, severe breathlessness, and discolored or mottled skin. Individuals with weak immune systems, cancer, kidney or liver disease, unmanaged diabetes, those over 65, and children younger than 1 are at higher risk. Treatment effectiveness significantly improves with early intervention, involving antibiotics, intravenous fluids, and vasopressors to address the infection, maintain blood flow, and manage blood pressure. Supportive care like dialysis or mechanical ventilation may be required for organ failure. Dr. Al Shidi emphasizes the importance of preventive measures, including staying updated on vaccinations, managing chronic illnesses, practicing good hygiene, recognizing warning signs, and seeking early care. The article underscores the need for public awareness and education to enhance recognition, prevention, and early intervention in addressing this silent killer.
