As Ramadan approaches, the Sharjah City Municipality has announced regulations requiring shops and restaurants intending to prepare and sell food during daylight hours to obtain permits. With the holy month anticipated to begin on March 12, establishments are urged to comply with the regulations, ensuring smooth operations and adherence to food safety standards.
In anticipation of Ramadan 2024, the Sharjah City Municipality has rolled out regulations mandating permits for shops and restaurants intending to prepare and sell food during daylight hours. The move aims to streamline operations and ensure compliance with food safety standards during the holy month.
According to the Sharjah Municipality, permits are necessary for displaying food outside shops before iftar time, encompassing restaurants, cafeterias, confectioneries, and pastry shops. This requirement extends to food outlets within malls and shopping centers as well, emphasizing the importance of regulatory compliance across all establishments.
The permit system encompasses two categories: one for displaying food during the day for preparation purposes and another for snack displays in front of eateries just before iftar. Each permit type comes with specific conditions that establishments must adhere to, ensuring uniformity and adherence to food safety protocols.
For food preparation and sale during daytime hours, establishments are required to pay a permit issuance fee of Dh3000. Notably, food must be served off-site, and receiving customers in the dining area is strictly prohibited. Additionally, food preparation and cooking are only permitted within designated kitchen areas, ensuring compliance with hygiene and safety standards.
Similarly, for the display of food outside shops before iftar, establishments must obtain a separate permit and pay a fee of Dh500. The displayed food must adhere to specific guidelines, including placement on the front sidewalk in non-corrosive metal containers within a glass box. Furthermore, food must be covered with aluminum foil or transparent food-grade plastic, stored at an appropriate temperature, and prepared on-site according to permitted activities.
To facilitate the permit application process, several service channels have been designated, including municipal centers and drawing studios. These centers serve as convenient hubs for establishments to obtain the necessary permits and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
In light of the upcoming Ramadan season, the implementation of these regulations underscores the Sharjah Municipality's commitment to promoting food safety and regulatory compliance.
