School employee fined Dh2,000 for taking unauthorised photo of 'sleeping' teacher
Unauthorised photo of a "sleeping" teacher results in a Dh2,000 fine for school employee
During a break between classes at a private school, a camera caught a teacher dozing off in the lounge.
After a school employee was found guilty of taking and sharing an unauthorised photo of a female teacher sleeping on campus, a court in Dubai fined them Dh2,000.
The incident occurred at a private school during a playtime when a teacher was caught sleeping in the faculty lounge.
The accused, a school administrator and colleague of the teacher, allegedly took advantage of the awkward situation and secretly photographed the teacher using her mobile phone. It was easy to make out the instructor's face in the photo.
After that, the school administration received the photo through WhatsApp.
The instructor took legal action after filing a privacy invasion complaint. As she explained it to me, the female employee was just doing her job.
Prone to a fine
On Saturday, the Arabic daily Emarat Al Youm reported that a court in Dubai had found the female school employee guilty of violating the teacher's right to privacy. A fine of Dh2,000 was the court's lenient punishment for her.
The United Arab Emirates has prohibitions against violating the privacy of others. Invading someone's privacy through social media postings can result in a heavy fine of up to Dh500,000 and six months in prison. This includes intentionally harming another person by taking, sharing, or publishing their photos or personal information.
