Saudi Arabian Airlines (Saudia) is set to pioneer sustainable air mobility by introducing air taxis for Haj and Umrah pilgrims traveling between Jeddah and Makkah. The national airline plans to purchase 100 all-electric Lilium Jets, German electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, making Saudia one of the first airlines in the MENA region to invest in this innovative mode of transportation.

The Lilium Jets, with their electric propulsion system, are designed to transport four to six passengers, offering an eco-friendly and efficient alternative for pilgrims. These aircraft can cover a maximum distance of 250 km, reducing travel time significantly. Additionally, the Lilium Jet features a versatile cabin design with multiple seat arrangement options, providing flexibility for passenger preferences.

Abdullah Al Shahrani, the director of corporate communications and spokesman for the Saudia Group, highlighted the potential of flying taxis to streamline transportation during the Haj season. The air taxis are expected to connect King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah with various hotels in Makkah, facilitating pilgrims' journeys and enhancing overall travel efficiency.

As part of the initiative, Saudia has entered into a contract to purchase 100 Lilium Jets, underscoring its commitment to sustainable air mobility. The Lilium Jet's electric propulsion system ensures zero operating emissions, aligning with Saudi Arabia's focus on environmentally friendly transportation solutions.

The Saudia Group also expressed its support for Lilium in obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals for the certification of the Lilium Jet within the country. This collaboration aims to advance Saudi Arabia's sustainable air mobility development strategy, emphasizing Saudia's role in driving innovation and eco-friendly practices in the aviation sector.

Currently serving a network of over 100 domestic and international destinations, Saudia is renowned for its world-class service and hospitality. The introduction of air taxis represents a significant step toward enhancing transportation options for pilgrims and contributing to the country's commitment to sustainable aviation practices.

This groundbreaking initiative reflects the evolving landscape of air travel, where electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft are emerging as viable solutions for short-distance, urban, and intra-city transportation. The Lilium Jets are poised to play a pivotal role in redefining air mobility, offering a combination of sustainability, efficiency, and convenience for passengers in the region.
