Renowned Urdu poet Munawwar Rana passed away on Sunday at the age of 71 in a hospital in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, after suffering a cardiac arrest. The poet had been grappling with a prolonged illness for several months.

Born on November 26, 1952, in Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh, Munawwar Rana gained prominence for his significant contributions to Urdu literature, particularly his work in ghazals. His poetic prowess earned him various accolades, including the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2014 for his poem 'Shahdaba.' However, he returned the award, citing concerns about 'intolerance' in the country.

Throughout his illustrious career, Rana received several other prestigious awards, such as the Ameer Khusro Award, the Mir Taqi Mir Award, the Ghalib Award, the Dr. Zakir Hussain Award, and the Saraswati Samaj Award.

The poet had been undergoing treatment at the PGI hospital in Lucknow before his demise. Widely admired for his ability to capture the essence of life through his poetic expressions, Munawwar Rana leaves behind a legacy in Urdu poetry that resonates with people globally.
