The eruption of the Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island has led to the cancellation of 29 flights from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in the Philippines. This information was reported by the state news agency (PNA) and cited by the Manila International Airport Authority on Tuesday, June 4.
On Monday night, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) raised the alert level of Mt. Kanlaon from Level 1 to Level 2 following an "explosive eruption" that lasted six minutes. The eruption propelled a plume of ash and steam five kilometers (three miles) into the sky, posing a significant hazard to aviation and prompting authorities to advise pilots to avoid flying near the volcano's summit. Ejecta from sudden phreatic eruptions can be particularly dangerous for aircraft.
The raised alert level indicates increased unrest and the potential for further eruptions. Phivolcs continues to monitor the volcano closely, issuing updates and warnings as necessary to ensure public safety. Residents and travelers are urged to stay informed about the latest developments.
Meanwhile, another volcanic eruption occurred in Indonesia, where Mount Ibu erupted on Tuesday, June 4, spewing thick columns of grey ash five kilometers (three miles) into the sky. Although there were no immediate reports of evacuations, authorities have barred all activities within seven kilometers (4.4 miles) of the crater to ensure the safety of the local population.
Both eruptions highlight the volatility of volcanic activity in the region and the need for vigilance and preparedness. The aviation sector, in particular, must remain cautious and responsive to such natural events to minimize disruption and ensure the safety of passengers and crew.
The situation remains dynamic, with authorities in both the Philippines and Indonesia monitoring the volcanic activity closely. Travelers are advised to check with airlines for flight status updates and to follow instructions from local authorities to stay safe.
The recent volcanic activities serve as a reminder of the powerful natural forces at play in these regions. Preparedness and timely response are crucial in mitigating the impact of such events on human lives and infrastructure.
