Last year, over 300,000 motorists in Abu Dhabi were fined for driving below the minimum speed limit, contributing to various traffic accidents. According to the Ministry of Interior's statistics, a total of 300,147 drivers were penalized for such offenses, highlighting the significance of adhering to speed regulations for road safety.

The federal traffic law imposes a fine of Dh400 for driving below the minimum speed limit and failing to prioritize vehicles coming from behind or from the overtaking lane. This regulation is designed to ensure that slower vehicles use the right lanes, while the left lanes are reserved for faster and overtaking vehicles.

In May 2023, Abu Dhabi authorities implemented a minimum speed limit of 120 km/h on the first two lanes of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Road in both directions. This measure aims to prevent traffic accidents and enhance the overall traffic flow. The maximum speed on this major highway is set at 140 km/h, and the minimum speed of 120 km/h applies to the first and second lanes from the left. Slower vehicles are permitted to use the third lane, where no minimum speed is specified, while heavy vehicles should always use the last lane, which is not subject to the minimum speed rule.

In addition to slow driving, tailgating is another offense that attracts penalties. Not maintaining sufficient distance between vehicles can result in a Dh400 fine. In Abu Dhabi, tailgating radars can catch and fine both the vehicle in front and the one behind if they are on the fast lane. The vehicle at the back also incurs an additional penalty of four black points on their driving record.

These regulations are part of a broader effort to enhance road safety and reduce accidents caused by improper driving practices. By enforcing minimum speed limits and penalizing tailgating, Abu Dhabi authorities aim to create a safer driving environment for all motorists.

Adhering to these rules is crucial for maintaining smooth traffic flow and preventing accidents. The significant number of fines issued last year underscores the need for greater awareness and compliance among drivers. It is essential for motorists to understand the importance of driving within the specified speed limits and maintaining safe distances between vehicles to ensure their safety and that of others on the road.

The initiatives taken by Abu Dhabi's traffic departments reflect a commitment to road safety and a proactive approach to managing traffic violations. As these measures continue to be enforced, it is expected that the incidence of traffic accidents will decrease, contributing to a safer driving experience for everyone.
