Cairo Citadel Expands: New Wing Open to Public

Cairo's iconic citadel, a historic symbol of the Egyptian capital, has unveiled a new wing to attract more visitors and enhance the country's tourism offerings. The newly accessible area features two semi-circular towers, adding to the allure of this medieval fortress.

Dating back to around 1176 AD, the Citadel of Cairo holds significant historical importance. It was constructed under the leadership of Salah Al Din Al Ayyubi, a renowned Muslim military commander who later achieved fame for reclaiming Jerusalem from the Crusaders in 1187 AD. Serving as the seat of Egypt's government for over seven centuries, the citadel stands as a testament to the nation's rich heritage.

The recently opened section, previously utilized for private events and military purposes, includes the Ramla and Haddad towers. These structures were erected in the years following Salah Al Din's tenure by his successors, Sultan Al Adil Al Ayyubi and Sultan Al Nasser Saladin Al Ayyubi.

Minister of Tourism, Ahmed Eissa, highlighted the significance of this expansion in bolstering Egypt's tourism sector. The move is part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at revitalizing tourism across the country, with further details set to be unveiled in the near future.

According to Eissa, visitor feedback has prompted the initiative to enhance the citadel experience. Currently, many tours of the citadel last only an hour. However, authorities aim to extend visitors' exploration time to at least three hours, allowing for a more immersive experience.

"This marks the beginning of our efforts to rebrand Cairo as a premier cultural destination," stated Eissa. The initiative, dubbed 'Cairo City Break,' seeks to showcase the city's cultural richness and historical significance to domestic and international travelers alike.

By opening up new areas within the citadel and extending visitor hours, Egypt aims to attract a broader range of tourists and offer them a deeper insight into the country's illustrious past. This endeavor aligns with the nation's commitment to preserving its heritage and promoting sustainable tourism practices.
