Netflix Password Sharing Crackdown Spurs Subscriber Rethink in UAE
Netflix Cracks Down on Password Sharing in UAE, Prompting Users to Reconsider Subscriptions
Netflix recently implemented a crackdown on password sharing in the UAE, informing users that an account is meant to be shared by people living in the same household. This move has led to some residents considering downgrading their plans or switching to other streaming platforms. The streaming giant's decision to restrict password sharing is an extension of similar measures implemented in various parts of the world.
Sarah Tiry, a South African expat, shares her Netflix account with her sisters in Cape Town. While the password-sharing ban has not yet affected her household, she anticipates its enforcement and is considering alternatives. Sarah expresses doubt about subscribing individually, stating, "I don't think I will get my account. While I watch it quite often, I know I don't use it enough to warrant subscribing for myself."
The crackdown has prompted several UAE residents to receive notifications requiring confirmation on their primary devices. According to Netflix's official website, accounts are intended to be shared only by individuals living together in the same household. Those residing in different households are encouraged to sign up for their own accounts.
Sarah Tiry, facing the prospect of needing individual subscriptions, highlights the importance of a diverse content library for her family. She emphasizes the need for more appealing shows for her preteen son on Netflix and mentions the possibility of switching to platforms like Disney+. Sarah suggests that Netflix could have introduced a family-sharing option instead of an outright ban on password sharing.
While Netflix offers an option to add an extra member to an account for $7.99 per month, this service is not currently available in the UAE, limiting users' choices. Areeb Siddiqui, a Dubai resident and primary Netflix account holder, adopts a wait-and-watch approach. He raises concerns about potential limitations when traveling and is considering downgrading his account to a basic plan to align with the new rules.
Areeb's Premium account allows multiple users on different devices, but the new restrictions could render this feature less beneficial if all devices must share the same IP address. Netflix had previously announced its capability to detect and restrict password-sharing by monitoring WiFi networks and IP addresses associated with devices on its platform. Users in the UAE are now evaluating their subscription options as Netflix takes measures to enforce tighter controls on password sharing.
