How much UAE families spend on caring for autistic children
Parenting a child with autism brings unique challenges, especially amid rising living costs. Families in the UAE may spend up to Dh50,000 monthly on caring for autistic children, a report from PwC Middle East reveals. Titled 'From awareness to action – Elevating autism care in the GCC for meaningful change,' the report delves into autism spectrum disorder prevalence and its financial implications in the Gulf region.
While the exact prevalence of autism in the GCC remains uncertain due to conflicting studies, the financial burden on families is undeniable. According to Lina Shadid, health industries lead at PwC Middle East, the economic and social impacts are significant. Families shoulder substantial expenses for healthcare, specialized education, and therapeutic services, often reaching Dh1 million over four years for care and education alone. Core diagnostic and therapeutic services come with high costs, ranging from Dh450 to Dh1,000 per hour in the UAE. Additionally, families incur expenses for autism specialists, with fees ranging from SAR100 to SAR600 per appointment in Saudi Arabia.
Moreover, the financial strain is exacerbated by limited insurance coverage and the complexity of the healthcare system. The emotional toll, compounded by societal stigma and lack of awareness, further isolates individuals with autism and their families.
However, there's hope in the initiatives undertaken by GCC countries, particularly the UAE, to improve autism care. The establishment of specialized centers and inclusive education policies reflects progress in integrating individuals with autism into society. Yet, there's room for enhancement, including expanded training programs for care providers and increased accessibility to autism centers. These improvements are crucial for supporting individuals with autism throughout their lives, ensuring they lead fulfilling and independent futures.
Early intervention is pivotal in improving outcomes for individuals with autism, leading to significant long-term cost savings. By focusing on early detection and intervention, access to care, community support, policy reforms, and research, meaningful change can be achieved in autism care across the GCC. As the report underscores, concerted efforts in these areas are essential for elevating autism care and fostering inclusivity and support for individuals with autism and their families.
