Experts at the 29th edition of Gulfood, one of the world's premier food trade fairs held in Dubai, have identified five prominent trends that will dominate the market.

Daniel Levine, a renowned trends expert and director of the Avant-Guide Institute, highlighted the interplay between global events and trends in the food industry. He emphasized that consumer preferences across various aspects of life, including food choices, are influenced by broader environmental and societal factors.

Vegan Meat: Plant-based meat alternatives have gained considerable popularity in the region, with brands even introducing plant-based shawarma meat. Jean Ordureau, a chef at French company Linck, noted the increasing demand for plant-based options driven by environmental consciousness and dietary preferences.

Alcohol-Free Beverages: The trend towards alcohol-free beverages, pioneered in the region, has gained momentum globally. Local company Drink Dry has experienced significant growth in sales, particularly for zero-alcohol versions of well-known brands like Corona Cero and Peroni Nastro Azzurro.

Green Packaging: With a growing emphasis on sustainability, consumers are gravitating towards green packaging solutions that facilitate recycling. Ahmed Yahya from Agthia company highlighted the appeal of bamboo-packaged water, which offers an eco-friendly alternative to traditional plastic bottles.

Transparency in Operations: In an era dominated by social media, companies are increasingly embracing transparency in their operations and practices. Local restaurant Boca, for instance, publicly shares its carbon footprint report, instilling confidence in customers about its sustainability efforts.

Emerging Flavors and Tastes: Consumers are becoming more adventurous in their palate preferences, embracing new flavor profiles and tastes. Hydroponically grown produce, known for its freshness and crispness, is gaining popularity due to its local sourcing and minimal travel distance to consumers' plates. Additionally, the emergence of chili crisp as a trending flavor profile has captivated the culinary world, with leading brands incorporating it into various dishes.

Overall, these trends reflect a shift towards more sustainable, diverse, and transparent food practices in the UAE. As consumers become increasingly mindful of their environmental impact and dietary choices, the future of food in the region is set to be characterized by innovation, inclusivity, and culinary exploration.
