From Dubai to the Skies: Tiana Spear's Air Ambulance Journey
Tiana Spear, a New Zealand air ambulance pilot, spent last Christmas working, providing emergency care to patients across the country. Her love for flying and empathy are deeply rooted in her upbringing in the UAE, where she was exposed to diverse cultures and developed a strong sense of understanding and connection with people. Tiana's stepdad was a pilot for Emirates, and growing up in a residential compound in Silicon Oasis surrounded by pilots further fueled her passion for aviation. Tiana's parents moved from New Zealand to Dubai in the mid-1990s, seeking new opportunities. Her father worked as the vice president of Hardee’s, and her mother initially worked as a restaurant manager before becoming a stay-at-home mom. Tiana, born in 1999, attended the Dubai American Academy, where she had the chance to explore various cultures. Engaging in cultural research projects, surrounded by friends from diverse backgrounds, enhanced her open-mindedness and acceptance of different cultures.
Recollecting her school days, Tiana fondly remembers catching horror movies in chilly cinema halls with her mom and family dinners at Eat & Drink restaurant in Al Barsha. She cherishes the memories of watching the Dubai Rugby 7s with themed costumes and adventurous outings at The Sevens Stadium. Swimming became a significant part of her life, starting as a hobby to beat Dubai’s hot climate and later evolving into a competitive sport where she excelled at butterfly swimming, participating in national and international competitions.
Tiana moved to New Zealand around four years ago but continues to miss the vibrant city life, especially the rich brunch experiences. She reminisces about the aromatic and flavorful hummus and the joy of flattening freshly baked Lebanese pita bread, a culinary experience she finds hard to replicate elsewhere.
Her journey as an air ambulance pilot reflects the culmination of her passion for flying and her innate empathy. Working with patients in critical situations, including premature babies and individuals with serious medical conditions, she emphasizes the importance of understanding diverse cultures in her profession.
