The highly anticipated Big Bad Wolf Book Sale has commenced in Sharjah, offering a thrilling literary experience for book enthusiasts. Running from December 19 to January 7 at Expo Centre Sharjah, the book fair opens its doors from 10 am to 12 am (midnight). In an exclusive interview with Khaleej Times, Andrew Yap, the co-founder and managing director of Big Bad Wolf, discussed the fair's origins and expectations for the Sharjah edition.
The vision of Big Bad Wolf is to "change the world through books," especially by selling children's books. Yap emphasized the importance of creating an exciting atmosphere to entice children to attend the fair, making reading fun and appealing. The fair aims to offer an extensive collection of discounted books, starting with discounts as high as 85%, and some books priced as low as Dh2. The median discount range is around 75%, providing a budget-friendly paradise for book lovers.
The fair covers a wide array of genres, including fiction, non-fiction, and children's books, with a whopping 50,000 titles available. Yap acknowledged that it would take several days to fully appreciate the extensive selection. This marks the first time the Big Bad Wolf Book Fair is being held in Sharjah, a city known for its libraries, Islamic museums, and cultural centers.
Expressing his excitement about bringing the fair to Sharjah, Yap recognized the vibrant community of readers and passionate students in the city. Historically, many Sharjah residents traveled to Dubai for Big Bad Wolf events, indicating the high demand for such literary gatherings in the emirate.
Reflecting on the overall Big Bad Wolf experience in the UAE, Yap praised the continuous government support. He stressed the importance of providing access to affordable books for children, advocating for a balance between bookstores and restaurants. Yap believes that the ratio of bookstores should be equal to restaurants, emphasizing the need to feed both the body and mind.
Looking ahead, Yap revealed plans to expand Big Bad Wolf exhibits to other emirates, responding to inquiries about bringing the event to Abu Dhabi. He highlighted the importance of media support for such expansions, emphasizing that collaboration is essential for success. The Big Bad Wolf Book Sale is not just a book fair; it's a movement to inspire a love for reading and make books accessible to all.
