Abu Dhabi Hindu Mandir to open for UAE residents on March 1
The first Hindu stone temple in Abu Dhabi, inaugurated earlier this month, is set to open its doors to the public on March 1st. After hosting overseas devotees and VIP guests from February 15 to 29, the historic BAPS Hindu Mandir will welcome visitors from all backgrounds, inviting them to experience its architectural grandeur and spiritual sanctity.
Constructed on a 27-acre site near Al Rahba, off the Dubai-Abu Dhabi Sheikh Zayed Highway, the temple stands as a symbol of cultural harmony and religious diversity in the United Arab Emirates. The land for the temple was generously donated by the UAE government, highlighting the nation's commitment to fostering interfaith understanding and cooperation.
With a significant Indian expatriate population of over 3.5 million in the UAE, there has been immense anticipation for the opening of the temple, which serves as a spiritual anchor for the community. The temple's inauguration ceremony, graced by Indian Prime Minister Modi and attended by thousands, marked a historic moment in bilateral relations between India and the UAE.
The architectural marvel, built at a cost of approximately Rs 700 crore, showcases intricate craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail. Modeled in the Nagara style of architecture, the temple boasts 18 lakh bricks and 1.8 lakh cubic meters of sandstone sourced directly from Rajasthan, India. It stands adorned with seven spires representing the seven Emirates of the UAE, symbolizing unity in diversity.
The temple's design incorporates elements from Hindu scriptures and traditions, as well as symbols of Emirati heritage. Carvings of camels and the national bird, the falcon, alongside depictions of Indian mythological tales, create a harmonious blend of cultures and civilizations. The inclusion of stories from diverse cultures reflects the temple's role as a cultural bridge, fostering understanding and appreciation across communities.
Inside, the temple's interior dazzles with white Italian marble adorned with intricately carved columns and walls. Two majestic domes, known as the "Dome of Peace" and the "Dome of Harmony," grace the structure, symbolizing tranquility and unity. The temple's facade features exquisite marble carvings juxtaposed against a sandstone backdrop, a testament to the skill and artistry of artisans from Rajasthan and Gujarat.
A highlight of the temple's design is the incorporation of holy water from the Ganga and Yamuna rivers, symbolizing purity and spiritual rejuvenation. Flowing on either side of the temple, these sacred waters evoke a sense of reverence and sanctity, inviting visitors to partake in moments of reflection and prayer.
As the temple prepares to open its doors to the public, community members and visitors alike eagerly await the opportunity to experience its serenity and splendor. With its rich architectural heritage and profound spiritual significance, the BAPS Hindu Mandir stands as a beacon of peace, harmony, and cultural exchange in the heart of Abu Dhabi.
