Abu Dhabi awards contract for first waste-to-energy facility

Abu Dhabi, known for its forward-thinking initiatives, is taking a significant step towards sustainable waste management with the awarding of a contract for its first waste-to-energy facility. This milestone project, awarded to a joint venture between Dubai's Alec Engineering and Contracting (Alec) and Lebanon's Butec, marks a pivotal moment in the region's commitment to environmental stewardship and renewable energy development.

The waste-to-energy plant, set to be located near the Al-Dhafra landfill, is a collaborative effort between the state-owned Emirates Water and Electricity Company (Ewec) and Abu Dhabi Waste Management Company (Tadweer). With a capacity to process 900,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste annually over the next three decades, the facility promises to revolutionize the region's approach to waste management.

One of the key objectives of this project is to mitigate environmental impact by preventing the release of over 1 million tonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions annually. Additionally, the plant will contribute to Abu Dhabi's renewable energy goals by adding 80 megawatts of power generation capacity from a non-fossil fuel source, further diversifying the emirate's energy mix and reducing reliance on traditional fossil fuels.

The Alec-Butec joint venture, in collaboration with Hitachi Zosen Innova, a Swiss-based cleantech company, will be responsible for the design and construction of the waste-to-energy facility. This comprehensive scope includes engineering, procurement, and construction of all non-process-related activities, such as civil engineering, concrete and structural steel work, and installation of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. Furthermore, the venture will oversee external works and site infrastructure development, ensuring the seamless integration of the facility into its surroundings.

While specific financial details and construction timelines were not disclosed, the waste-to-energy project is expected to commence commercial operations by the fourth quarter of 2026, according to reports from the UAE state-backed Wam news agency.
