5 Emirati artists create new artwork installed in public garden
In a picturesque setting overlooking the Etihad Museum and Union House, the Al Hudaiba public garden now hosts a striking artwork titled the 'Union of the Artists' installation. This collaborative project was initiated by the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) in partnership with Art Dubai.
The artwork, crafted by five esteemed Emirati artists, was chosen from a pool of over 250 submissions following an open call by Dubai Culture and Art Dubai last year. Drawing inspiration from the traditional UAE architecture of Areesh, which utilizes intricately woven palm leaves, the artists aimed to capture the essence of unity and collaboration deeply rooted in Emirati society. Just as the construction of Areesh embodies collective effort and cohesion, the artwork symbolizes the seamless integration and mutual support within the UAE community.
As part of the Dubai Public Art initiative, this installation contributes to enhancing visual culture across the city. The overarching goal is to transform Dubai's public spaces into cultural hubs, showcasing a diverse array of artworks, sculptures, and installations.
The 'Union of the Artists' installation explores the themes of tension, balance, and unity, embodied by seven pillars representing the united spirit of the UAE. Each pillar signifies key values such as teamwork, cooperation, equality, and solidarity. Collaborating on this project were Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim, renowned for his experimental art; Shaikha Al Mazrou, a visual arts professor; Asma Belhamar, an assistant professor known for her creative endeavors; Khaled Albanna, whose work delves into UAE history; and Afra Al Dhaheri, drawing inspiration from her Abu Dhabi upbringing.
Through their collective efforts, the artists sought to merge their diverse experiences and expertise into a singular installation, aiming to ignite the community's imagination and celebrate the unity of the seven emirates. Their collaborative endeavor reflects a shared commitment to artistic expression and cultural enrichment.
This initiative not only adds vibrancy to Dubai's public spaces but also fosters a deeper appreciation for Emirati heritage and creativity. As visitors engage with the 'Union of the Artists' installation, they are invited to reflect on the rich tapestry of Emirati culture and the values that bind its people together.
