UAE Passengers Recount Horrors of Losing Valuables Mid-Air
Losing valuables during a flight can be a distressing experience, as many UAE passengers have recently discovered. Arsalan Hameed, a former UAE resident, recounted his ordeal after a journey from Abu Dhabi to Riyadh via Doha. Exhausted from multiple flight delays, he fell asleep on his flights, only to realize at home that his cash and Rolex watch, worth approximately Dh73,000, had been stolen.
Sharjah resident Muhammad Salman Lakhany had a similar experience after a short flight from Riyadh to Dubai. He discovered that one of his cards had been used for a fraudulent transaction of Dh18,803, and cash amounting to $1,900 was missing from his carry-on bag. These incidents, though not common, highlight the vulnerabilities passengers face.
Bhavica Khatri, a former UAE-based cabin crew member, shared insights into how such thefts occur. According to her, organized groups often target night flights when passengers are asleep and cabin crew are less visible. These groups coordinate to pretend to search for lost items while actually stealing from overhead bins.
To stay safe, travel experts offer several tips:
1. Travel Insurance : Always get travel insurance to cover potential losses.
2. Keep Valuables Close : Avoid placing valuable items in checked luggage or overhead bins. Keep them with you at all times.
3 Invest in Good Bag: Use high-quality, secure bags with travel locks.
4 Use Smart Tags: Consider luggage trackers for valuable items.
5. Be Vigilant: Always keep an eye on your carry-on baggage and be aware of your surroundings.
When theft is suspected, passengers should inform cabin crew discreetly. If the theft is discovered after the flight, it's crucial to report it to local authorities and the airline immediately.
Hameed's attempts to seek help from the airline were met with a reminder that passengers are responsible for their possessions. Lakhany, however, managed to block his cards and report the incident to the police promptly.
Ultimately, these experiences serve as a reminder for travelers to stay vigilant and take proactive measures to protect their belongings, ensuring a safer and more secure journey.
