  New Health Insurance Scheme 

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced a significant development in its healthcare system, introducing a mandatory health insurance scheme for private sector employees and domestic workers. Starting January 1, 2025, employers will be obligated to provide health coverage for their registered workers when issuing or renewing their residency permits.

 Expanding Coverage 

This decision marks a pivotal step towards ensuring comprehensive healthcare coverage for the country's workforce. Previously, Abu Dhabi and Dubai had laws mandating health insurance for employees, with Abu Dhabi extending coverage to include employees' families. Now, the UAE-wide scheme aims to encompass all private sector employees and domestic workers who lack existing health insurance coverage.

 Government Initiative

The implementation of this scheme underscores the government's commitment to enhancing the well-being of its citizens and residents. The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) will spearhead awareness campaigns and initiatives to facilitate the smooth execution of the mandatory health insurance programme.

 Comprehensive Protection 

This initiative supplements the existing mandatory insurance schemes aimed at safeguarding employees' rights and welfare. Last year, a scheme was introduced to protect workers from job loss, benefitting over 7.2 million employees from both the private and federal government sectors. Moreover, the Workers' Protection Programme ensures that workers' wages and entitlements are secured in the event of employer bankruptcy, covering 98.8% of the workforce.

 Government Commitment

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE, emphasized the government's dedication to enhancing the nation's labor market stability and competitiveness. Recognizing the workforce as the driving force behind the economy, Sheikh Mohammed highlighted the importance of addressing their concerns and safeguarding their rights.

 Additional Cabinet Decisions

In addition to the healthcare initiative, the Cabinet approved several other measures aimed at bolstering various aspects of society. Notably, the validity period of Emirati passports for individuals aged 21 and above was extended from five to 10 years, streamlining administrative processes and enhancing convenience for citizens.

Furthermore, the Digital Wellbeing Council took decisive action against online threats targeting the youth, shutting down over 160,000 websites and social media accounts promoting substance abuse and illicit activities. Sheikh Mohammed emphasized the pivotal role of families, media, and schools in nurturing awareness among the younger generation and safeguarding their well-being.
