Renowned Figures Awarded for Human Fraternity
Egyptian cardiac surgeon Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub, Chilean grassroots leader Sister Nelly Leon Correa, and Indonesian Islamic organizations Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah have been honored with the prestigious Zayed Award for Human Fraternity. The Secretary-General of the Zayed Award, Judge Mohamed Abdelsalam, highlighted how the recipients embody the values of the historic Document on Human Fraternity, serving as beacons of hope in their communities and contributing to global peace.
Outstanding Contributions to Humanitarian Efforts
Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah, Indonesia's largest Islamic organizations with over 190 million members, received recognition for their substantial humanitarian and peacebuilding endeavors. Their impact extends through the establishment of educational institutions, hospitals, and poverty alleviation projects, positively influencing the lives of countless individuals in Indonesia and vulnerable populations worldwide.
Sir Magdi Yacoub, founder of the Magdi Yacoub Heart Foundation in Egypt and the Chain of Hope charitable organization in the UK, was honored for his exceptional efforts in providing life-saving medical care, particularly to vulnerable populations. His groundbreaking surgical techniques have revolutionized heart transplants, and he has established cardiac centers in Ethiopia and Mozambique, with another center in Kigali, Rwanda, in progress.
Dedicated Humanitarian Work
Sister Nelly Leon Correa, affectionately known as 'Mother Nelly,' is the president and co-founder of Fundacion Mujer Levantate (Woman Standing Up Foundation). Her organization focuses on supporting incarcerated women, providing comprehensive assistance during their time in prison, and aiding their reintegration into society. Committed to the principles of human fraternity, the foundation brings hope to incarcerated individuals and facilitates the restoration of those recently released. Nearly 94% of program participants remain conviction-free within two years of release.
The Zayed Award for Human Fraternity, named in honor of the late Founding Father Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, recognizes individuals and organizations for their outstanding contributions to humanitarianism and their commitment to helping people regardless of their background. The award ceremony will take place at the Founder's Memorial in Abu Dhabi on February 5, following the International Day of Human Fraternity on February 4.
