Avoid airport check-in queues for free amid travel rush; here’s how
Every summer, UAE airports witness long queues at airline check-in counters as families embark on their annual vacations. These lines, particularly during peak travel periods, could be reduced by about 25 percent if more passengers utilize online or alternative check-in methods, according to a senior airline executive. These methods are often free and significantly reduce waiting times.
Maryam Al Tamimi, VP of Passenger Services at Dubai-based Emirates, shared with Khaleej Times that passengers who check-in online and use self-service baggage drop kiosks experience much quicker transactions upon arriving at the airport. Emirates anticipates flying 2.6 million passengers from Dubai International Airport (DXB) during the peak travel rush, with the busiest day expected to be Saturday, July 6.
Efficient Check-In Alternatives
-
Online and App Check-In: Checking in online or via the app is the most popular method, utilized by nearly 50 percent of passengers. This option opens 48 hours before flight departure and allows passengers to proceed directly to the self-service kiosks for baggage drop, significantly reducing queueing time.
-
Early Baggage Drop at the Airport: Passengers can drop off their luggage at the airport the day before their flight for free. For flights to the US, bags can be dropped off 12 hours before departure. This service allows passengers to head directly to the immigration area closer to departure time, bypassing the check-in counters.
-
City Check-In Facilities: Emirates offers city check-in facilities at Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) and Ajman Central Bus Terminal. At these locations, passengers can drop off their luggage as early as 24 hours and up to four hours before a flight, providing flexibility and convenience.
-
Home Check-In Services: Emirates provides a home check-in service where agents complete the check-in process at the customers' homes, hotels, or offices. They take the bags directly to the flight, allowing passengers to arrive at the airport with only their hand luggage. This service is complimentary for first-class passengers and Platinum Skywards members. However, passengers traveling to the US must still present their documents in person at the airport due to US regulations.
Etihad Airways' Solutions
Etihad Airways is also preparing for one of its busiest summers, expecting around five million travelers at Zayed International Airport between June and September. They offer a home check-in service starting from Dh220 for up to four bags, regardless of the number of passengers. This service allows passengers to skip queues and arrive at the airport without checked luggage.
Etihad also provides automated self-service bag drops at the terminal for those using online check-in. Additionally, the airline has introduced offsite check-in and bag-drop facilities at various locations, including Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal, The Fountains – YAS Mall, Mussafah, and Al Ain. Passengers using these services from June 10 to August 15 are rewarded with 2,000 guest miles.
Streamlining Airport Experiences
These various check-in options aim to streamline the travel experience for passengers, significantly reducing the time spent in queues and ensuring a smoother journey from start to finish. The emphasis on alternative check-in methods not only eases congestion at the airport but also enhances the overall travel experience, making it more convenient and stress-free for passengers.
With the availability of these multiple check-in methods, passengers are encouraged to take advantage of them to enjoy a hassle-free travel experience. By planning ahead and utilizing these services, travelers can avoid the stress of long queues and focus on enjoying their summer vacations.
