A stunning display of two hundred drones illuminating the night sky was witnessed as wedding guests were treated to a dazzling spectacle last week in Dubai. The drones formed scenes from the couple's love story, culminating with a giant heart that had a glimmering heart with their initials emblazoned in the middle.

As per industry experts, drone shows are making waves and becoming a favored aspect for couples aiming to take the grandeur of their wedding celebrations to the next level.

“Back when we started, the thought of a drone show at a wedding was quite unimaginable,” Said as he schmoozed over a glass of champagne, co-founder and MD of BotLab Dynamics, Indian company which organizes drone shows. “Now, there is a rapidly growing trend of couples wanting to include drone shows in their celebrations.”

The demand is surging in the region as well, says the company which has done over a hundred wedding drone shows in different cities across India.

“Indian destination weddings, particularly in Dubai, have fully adopted drone entertainment,” she noted. “We have observed an increase in inquiries from Indian families hosting weddings in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and other international cities – they desire the same type of spectacular display beneath the sky. Likewise, people from other parts of the Middle East and even Southeast Asia have shown interest after watching our videos.”

The 'wow' factor

As per Sarita, it is the 'wow' element that underlines the appeal of a drone show that lures couples to host weddings. “At the wedding reception in Dubai, the moment the show began, there was this intake of breath from the guests,” she recalled. “The bride and groom were standing, and the entire gathering was utterly captivated. It’s heartening to witness people of all ages, including children and seniors, getting amazed together.”

She noted that interest in wedding drone shows surged following the event her company did for the pre-wedding celebration of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant in 2024.

Considered to be one of the most expensive weddings globally, Mukesh Ambani's son was married for an estimated amount of 600 million dollars. "We flew in over 5,500 drones to that event which at the time was the biggest drone light show in the country, " the Indian woman recalls.

“It was seen on over hundreds of news outlets. I think for the public awareness purposes, something like that is a completely different segment of drone shows were made aware to the public,” explains the woman as she elaborated further.

In her opinion, there are endless hours required to coordinate the various working parts that make up a show which is executed seamlessly. “Planning for something that happens in a few months is ideal,” he discussed while he planned the final details leading towards the wedding.

Obstacles

A local planner noted that for the general public, shows that include flying drones will not become popular for quite some time, mainly due to the cost.

“Drone displays are, without a doubt, becoming more sought after at lavish weddings for those wanting that ‘wow’ factor and an amazing experience,” said Rhiannon Downie-Hurst, Founder of BrideClubME. “As an example, in the UAE, the host is required to keep in mind permits, venue restrictions, safety protocols, and choosing an approved operator when organizing a drone display for the big day.” She added, “The cost is still a primary issue, restricting access to lower end celebrations.”

“As an example, I remember when myself, a UAE National, was looking into organizing a drone show for my daughter’s wedding,” said M.K.H., a Dubai resident who did not wish to be identified. “Their cost was mind-boggling and would have nearly doubled the wedding budget. We instead opted for traditional fireworks,” he added.  essional, noted that drone shows come in all scales and budgets. “Drone entertainment has become far more affordable now,” she mentioned. “For a few h

As an example, Sarita, a wedding profundred drones, you can have quite a stunning show at a price close to that of a lavish wedding fireworks show or an expensive one.”
