Aysha Fousul and her 15-year-old daughter Mariam were expecting their eviction today from their Barsha Heights apartment in Dubai. As for the mother and daughter, with their unpaid electricity rent piling up, they were prepared for the worst.

Electricity was restored and rent was paid through the astonishing generosity of readers across the UAE, giving the family a newfound lifeline.

“I’m yet to comprehend this,” Aysha said. “Not long ago, I was trapped in a room with no visible way out. The citizens of this country have my undying gratitude. It’s astonishing.”

Equally touched is her daughter Mariam: “We no longer have to live in fear of being homeless, so I can finally study. It feels like I can breathe again.”
After embracing Islam in 2008, Aysha moved to the UAE seeking to start afresh. However, a failed marriage followed by a travel ban due to unpaid debts meant she was forced to struggle to survive.

A community united

Support poured in from different places across the UAE. From Abu Dhabi and Sharjah to Ajman and even Ras Al Khaimah, people were willing to lend a helping hand. An anonymous Dubai resident went out of his way to pay the entire utility bill, suggesting he couldn’t sit still after hearing the story.

“I can’t follow the news without reacting. I believe the community needs to support one another.” said one source.

Now that Aysha’s immediate problems have been resolved, she looks forward to trying to rebuild her life. “I want to make sure this never happens to us again,” she said. “This second chance means everything to me, and I refuse to squander it. I owe it to my daughter to give her a better future.”
