UAE: Now, take driverless Uber to airport in Abu Dhabi
You can now get a driverless ride in Abu Dhabi when Uber partners with WeRide for specific routes.
Users of the Uber app can also opt in via Ride Preferences in their Uber app settings, to have more opportunity to be paired with WeRide vehicles when booking UberX or Uber Comfort services.
The service will start out on certain territories, such as Saadiyat Island, Yas Island, as well as to and from Zayed International Airport, but it will be further expanded into other locations in Abu Dhabi in future.
In the first stage of launch, there will be a safety operator in each vehicle for a safe and reliable ride for all passengers and pedestrians. This stage is building the foundation for full-scale commercial driverless services later in 2025.
The Vice Chairman of the Presidential Court for Special Affairs Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has witnessed an autonomous driving system launched on Uber.
As per Smart and Autonomous Systems Council (SASC), Tawasul Transport will be running the WeRide fleet on Uber platform under the direction of the Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility).
Dr Abdulla Al Ghafli, Acting Director-General of the Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility) said: "This program is one of the most significant steps towards our objectives of transport development and the use of the advanced technologies. "We are sure that travelling by smart transport service, for example, in self-driving cars, will be an innovative and secure experience for passengers".
"It will also help to contribute a great deal in moving faster towards greener and more sustainable modes of transportation in Abu Dhabi. We will continue to work on making Abu Dhabi more competitive in using intelligent solutions that will help to increase our citizens’ quality of life. This vision is a vision we look forward to further working with local and international partners".
