UAE NMO warns of legal action as social media users urged to uphold national values
The National Media Office (NMO) on Friday reiterated the necessity for social media users in the UAE to adhere to national values and the values of respect, tolerance and coexistence as part of responsible digital communication.
The office said in a statement that social media users are legally and ethically bound to refrain from posting content that dishonours national symbols, public figures or the societies of friendly countries.
The same statement further emphasized that violations of such directives and their non-compliance with the laws of the country, aimed at securing a safe and healthy digital media environment in which mutual respect is guaranteed, which will be addressed with firm public prosecution in order to secure a safe and respectful online environment.
In addition, the statement warned that spreading fake news, hate speech or defamation — directly, indirectly or by implication — is illegal and carries severe penalties under the law.
The media office says all have a duty to preserve the reputation of the UAE — a view echoed by the President, who also said that its citizens should be ambassadors of the country.
Sheikh Mohamed appealed to them to enhance the goodwill image of the UAE based on their knowledge, conduct and national character, saying: "Your Emirati character comes through in every single thing you do, good or bad. Each and every one of us is an ambassador and honour guard for this country, and it is up to all of us to create the reputation it holds in the world.
The office requested social media users to be sensible in publishing and sharing messages on social media channels. The body also reiterated that it will continue to work with relevant authorities to monitor breaches and act against them while encouraging the public to report offensive or unlawful content through the established process in support of efforts to ensure a credible and responsible digital media space.
The National Media Office also called on social media users to emulate the values of the leadership of the UAE, which is a role model for humility and noble moral standards. It stressed that the conduct of citizens and residents on social media must reflect the aspirations of the leadership who is keen on maintaining true traditions and principles.
The office also shed light on the guidelines set by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, on the principles of an Emirati social media presence. These are: embodying the values and ethics of the Father of Nations, Sheikh Zayed; reflecting the culture, knowledge, and civilization of the UAE; avoiding insult, obscenity, or provocative language; encouraging constructive discourse; and engaging and participating positively with ideas, cultures, and societies.
