The UAE Government has on Wednesday notified a new decree-law in the interests of family security and community integration.

It pertains to status: the new law contains penalties for abuse, and includes provisions for situations, such as legal marriage age and divorce if the husband or wife is addicted to particular drugs.

The new law will increase family solidarity and social security and will ensure family members’ rights are better secured.

The main changes made in the new law are:

Punishment for beating, mistreating, abandoning or leaving parents behind. They’re even stiffer for refusing to support financially if asked.
Punishment for crimes involving attacks on minors property, taking a minor with you, stealing inheritance and spending estate money.

Adding additional requirements for structuring laws of wills.

Preventing issues of inheritance, wills and special cases relating to alimony and custodial care from being submitted to family reconciliation and guidance centres.

Giving a judge the authority to refer an incident to family reconciliation and guidance facilities to speed things up.
Determining that marriage can be done only by consent at the age of 18 years and governing how guardianship for marriage may be assigned to the court.

Enabling one of the spouses to seek divorce if the other is drug or psychoactive or drinking addicted.

Refocusing on the child’s best interests and giving the child the right to decide for himself or herself which parent to be raised with after he/she is 15 years old.
