The ICC announced on Tuesday that the Women's T20 World Cup has been moved from Bangladesh to the UAE.
The competition is scheduled to occur in both Dubai and Sharjah in the UAE from October 3 to 20.

In a statement, Geoff Allardice, ICC Chief Executive, expressed regret that Bangladesh is not hosting the Women's T20 World Cup, acknowledging that the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) would have organized a significant event.

I appreciate the BCB team's efforts to consider all options for hosting the event in Bangladesh, but travel advisories from several participating teams made it impossible. Nevertheless, they will maintain the privilege of hosting. We are excited about bringing an ICC global event to Bangladesh soon.

I also want to express gratitude to the Emirates Cricket Board for hosting on behalf of the BCB and thank Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe for their generous offers of support. We are excited about the prospect of ICC global events in both countries in 2026.

Bangladesh is experiencing political turmoil as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was compelled to step down and leave the country due to prolonged student demonstrations against a government job quota system.

Previously, the UAE has also organized successful events following terror attacks in Pakistan and the Covid-19 pandemic.
The IPL and PSL were both held in the UAE after the Covid pandemic.

The UAE welcomed the Pakistan cricket team's home games for multiple years following the 2009 Lahore terror incident involving the Sri Lankan team.

In 2021, the UAE took over hosting duties for the Men's T20 World Cup from India, who had to cancel due to the Covid-19 pandemic's second wave.

Even though the UAE has been a host to many major men's cricket tournaments since the 1980s, this marks the country's inaugural chance to host a top-tier women's cricket tournament.

Ten teams were able to secure a spot in the 2024 T20 World Cup, with the teams split into two groups consisting of five teams each.

In Group A, defending champions Australia will be joined by India, New Zealand, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, while Group B will consist of Bangladesh, England, West Indies, Scotland, and South Africa.

Each group will send the two best teams to the semifinals.

The upcoming Women's T20 World Cup will mark the ninth edition, following England's hosting of the inaugural tournament in 2009.

Australia is the team with the most success, clinching the championship six times (2010, 2012, 2014, 2018, 2020, 2023).
England (2009) and the West Indies (2016) have also achieved success in the competition.
