uae calls for ceasefire in sudan during ramadan, pledges $200 million in aid

The United Arab Emirates demanded a humanitarian ceasefire during the forthcoming Ramadan period amidst the Sudan war. Regional leaders gathered in Ethiopia on Friday to discuss the ongoing conflict when the appeal was made.

Reem Al-Hashimy, the UAE’s Minister of State for International Cooperation, said: The UAE calls on all parties to respect the sacred month of Ramadan with a humanitarian ceasefire amid its arrival.

The minister addressed participants at the High-Level Humanitarian Conference for the People of Sudan by highlighting how the war has devastated lives since its inception two years ago.

The ongoing conflict in Sudan represents one of the most severe humanitarian disasters across the globe. She described the war as having persisted for too long with excessive innocent casualties and immense human suffering.

The United Arab Emirates received support from France, Canada, the US, Ethiopia and Democratic Republic of the Congo for a Ramadan ceasefire proposal in Sudan which the Sudanese army declined according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Minister of State Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan reinforced Al-Hashimy's position while highlighting the immediate need for a ceasefire.

The Muslim world will celebrate the arrival of the Blessed Holy Month of Ramadan in two weeks. Sheikh Shakhboot stated that all parties should respect these sacred days and agree to a humanitarian pause during this time.

He pointed out that this pause would both respect Ramadan's themes of mercy and compassion while creating a vital chance to reduce the extreme distress faced by Sudanese women and children.

All parties must respect their international humanitarian law obligations which prohibit arbitrary challenges to lifesaving humanitarian assistance.

Additional $200 million in humanitarian aid

At the conference Sheikh Shakhboot declared a major financial support for Sudan's struggling citizens with an extra $200-million (Dh743,000) assistance package to Sudan.

We are demonstrating our dedication to Sudan's people by providing an additional $200 million in humanitarian aid. He expressed that our ongoing solidarity has led to $3.5 billion in support for Sudan over the past decade.

Emphasising the fundamental rights of the Sudanese people, he added: Every nation stands united in recognizing the fundamental rights of Sudanese people as rights that must be protected. They have the right to be safe. They have the right to food. The Sudanese people possess fundamental rights to essential life provisions including medical care and shelter along with access to clean water.
