On Monday, the UAE announced Eid Al Fitr holiday dates for government sector employees nationwide.

On its part, the Federal Authority for Government Human Resources said the holiday will last from Shawwal 1 until the end of Shawwal 3, 1446 AH, which corresponds to the Gregorian calendar.

On Shawwal 4, official work will begin again. This is because Islamic months last 29 or 30 days and moon sightings across the UAE will take place on March 29. Eid is observed on Shawwal 1 after the completion of the holy month of Ramadan.

Should the crescent be seen on the 29th March, Eid Al Fitr will fall on Gregorian 30th March, Sunday. This will mean for the government employees, three days of Eid Al Fitr holiday till 1st April.

The four day break spanning from March 29 to April 1 will includes Saturday, which is a holiday in most of the country for the majority of employees.

However, if the Moon is not sighted on March 29 and the month of Ramadan is 30 days, then the first day of Shawwal will be on Monday, March 31. This would result in Eid holidays spanning three days — from March 31 to April 2. In this instance, residents will receive a five-day long weekend from March 29 to April 2.

In case if holy month of Ramadan spans over 30 days, Ramadan 30 (Sunday, March 30) will be added up in the Eid Al Fitr holidays and will be declared a holiday as well.
