Soon, you could be able to check in your baggage from anywhere in the city before heading to the Dubai airport (DXB). This is because DXB aims to ensure that a minimum of 25 percent of luggage is checked in outside the airport facility.

"We handled 24 million bags this quarter, so we’re going to exceed 100 million bags in Dubai this year,” said Ciaran O’Sullivan, DVP Airline Services at UAE Airport Operations Dnata. “If we could have 20 percent of them, that is one in five bags, to be checked off-site here in Dubai, the impact on customer service experience at the airport would be tenfold.”

Ciaran made these remarks during a panel at The Airport Show which started in Dubai on Tuesday. He mentioned that the airport was looking to increase their partnership with Dubz which enables travelers to check in and receive their boarding pass from home or a hotel.

“Unit price reduction is only achievable with scale, and they serve thousands of customers every year, Jos said. Partnering with RTA, the metro system, Dubai Airport, holiday companies, hotels, and the masses allows significant progress.”

Launched in 2016, Dubz won an aviation and travel incubator competition from Emirates Group, GE, and Dubai Tourism with their online baggage collection and delivery service. They were later acquired by Dnata.

Passenger perception

“Managing baggage is crucial for the Dubai airport, as an accurate view of service starts with looking at baggage delivery speed and the degree of care taken,” says John Dyett, Vice President of Baggage Service Delivery at DXB. “For most passengers, baggage handling is the major contributing factor to shape their view of the airport. What steps can be done to unlock speed and predictability while reducing the chance of error?”

From 250,000 bags a day in the first quarter of the year, the airport could reach 300,000 on busy days.

Dr. Heba Kurdi, Artificial Intelligence Research Affiliate at MIT, commented that some airports around the world have started using AI technology for effective delivery of baggage to the correct destination. “Some airports already have semi-intelligent sorting techniques for baggage,” she noted. “There is also AI simulation and digital twins technology that aids airports to do and test operations prior to the actual time.”

Amel Chadli, President of Gulf Countries, Schneider Electric, another expert at the event, praised the vision of Dubai Airport as ‘forward thinking’ with potential benefits to further enhance passenger experience in the future.

“He noted, “Dubai Airport Off-Terminal Baggage Check-In drives ease of terminal congestion, improves operational efficiency, and advances passenger experience.” 'From all the international airports we support, we have noted that smart automation and energy-saving technologies along with advanced distribution management have become essential in enhancing ground handling and enabling effortless travel.'”
