School bus fees in UAE: Is Dh25 a day worth compromising your child's safety?
There are bus operators attempting to increase the number of kids catching a ride with them. Their plan? Lower bus fares by 15%. This is happening as Dubai eyes a rise of student bus riders by 13%. Their goal is to lessen the traffic near schools.
School travel expenses continue to be a hot topic. More frequently, parents, mainly those with more kids, request schools and service deliverers to slash charges, making commutes more budget friendly.
When schools began a fresh year in August, a top UAE transport provider’s office was visited on a Tuesday. The goal? To see if lowering costs could make their services easier to use, and therefore, more popular.
Steve Burnell, the head honcho of STS group, stated, "We're a business. Costs go up annually, fuel being a prime example because it varies monthly. Nonetheless, we determine a charge early in the year. Sadly, fuel prices don't stay put, they're always fluctuating. Post-Covid, they've never returned to their former rates. In fact, they even doubled at a certain point. That rise, along with worker pay, new rules, bus imports, and transporting expenses- we shouldered all of that. This risk, it's entirely on us."
Right now, STS serves over 92 schools. They help more than 120,000 students. How? With their fleet of over 3,800 smart buses. And guess what? They have more than 4,500 drivers!
"Various strategies were put into action in numerous schools. One such was the reduction of bus fees by 15 per cent to attract more riders. Even though we have a market, it's crucial to support and educate. However, after two terms, we discovered that these tactics didn't create any significant changes due to time constraints, accessibility, and funding issues."
Setting up unified systems to oversee maintenance, track fuel use, and plan driver routes contributes to cutting unnecessary operations and expenses. It's a method regularly used by UAE providers. Still, Burnell emphasized the need for a change in parents' perspectives, too.
"Suppose adjustments were made to controller costs, we could revisit the topic of cost reduction. However, freedom of choice remains with parents. Options include high-cost schools or more economic ones, each choice reflecting the education system that fits your needs."
"Think about getting around town. You might walk or bike if things are close. If there's a bus near your house, you could take it. Or, you might use a taxi. Maybe your parents drop you off at school. Each one costs different amounts. And they take different amounts of time. Also, the quality varies. It's hard to find something that's quick, inexpensive, and good. Usually, you can't get all three in one option," he stated.
Running a school bus fleet has its ups and downs. Fuel costs and paying your team? Those are pretty steady. But when it comes to getting new buses, that's a whole different ball game. You've got things like inflation shaking things up. Then throw in supply chain problems, and demand for different models, and suddenly costs can swing wildly.
"We shoulder all those risks," he commented. Yet, Burnell underscored the unique bond between parents, drivers, and bus guardians, making school transport distinct.
The bond between bus staff and a parent is unique. The same driver and bus guardian greet your child each day. This consistent pattern brings unmatched confidence. But what's the value you'd place on your child's safety? Would you consider Dhs 20 per day? Or perhaps Dhs 30 for a week? If a service seems too inexpensive, it might raise eyebrows. Shifting every parent's perspective isn't in my hands.
"Every day, we inspect our buses. Our Operations Control Centre uses cutting-edge technology and a focused strategy to boost students' safety and streamline operations. Parents can stop worrying about their kids' journey back from school. If the bus is late, they can simply check the App. School buses have a regular arrival time within a set period. The bus attendant ensures that the child alights safely, crosses the road, and reaches the entrance for a daily rate of Dhs 25, based on an average cost."
The business likewise oversees a project named 'Pause, Hear, and Experience.' They set up school happenings and welcome parents to test the bus service for an entire week at no cost. "If it suits you, feel free to purchase. If it doesn't, no worries," they express.
Speaking on transport and its effect on the environment, Burnell stated, "A car releases less carbon dioxide than a bus from a broad viewpoint. But if you compare it per passenger, a bus emits 40 times less CO2 than a car. Why? Because a car usually only transports about one to two people, while a bus typically takes 20-22 students to school." On top of that, the firm has now installed B5 biofuel tanks at three schools, allowing them to help a total of eight schools.
