The UAE astronomy Centre announced on X on Tuesday that astronomical calculations suggest Shaaban will begin on Friday January 31.

Shaaban is the month that comes right before the fasting month of Ramadan during which millions of Muslims worldwide engage in fasting.

Muslim countries will observe the moon on the 29th day of Shaaban to establish the start date of Ramadan. The start of Ramadan depends on authorities seeing the crescent moon with the naked eye.

The start date for Muslims' fasting period this year varies by location but is expected to fall on March 1.

The 29th of January 2025 corresponds to Rajab 29th 1446 AH in most Muslim nations. The center's director Mohammad Shawkat Odeh said that the crescent moon marking Shaaban cannot be seen from any region in the Islamic world because it sets either before sunset or simultaneously.

The month of Rajab will end after thirty days in these countries because January 31 will mark the first day of Shaaban according to his statement.

The centre announced that Muslims across all countries together with Southern Europe and Africa in addition to the US will see the crescent moon without any aid on Thursday January 30.

The first day of Ramadan falls on January 31 in those regions where Thursday marks Rajab 29. Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Bangladesh, Morocco, Mauritania, Cameroon, and Albania are countries included in this list.
