Mo Craig Leads Junior Dubai Desert Classic
In the inaugural round of the second Junior Dubai Desert Classic at the Emirates Golf Club's Faldo Course, Mo Craig from Jumeirah Golf Estates took the lead with a two-under-par 70. The tournament features a field of 52 golfers, including international participants from England, France, India, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, and Sweden. The competition, which includes both boys and girls aged 18 and under, serves as the first official activity for the 2024 HERO Dubai Desert Classic, a Rolex Series Event on the DP World Tour.
Craig, starting on the fourth hole in a shotgun start format, navigated his way through the initial six holes with one bogey and five pars. A spectacular eagle on the 10th hole, followed by a birdie on the 13th, propelled him to two-under for the round. Despite a bogey on the 15th, he secured another birdie on the final hole, number 3, finishing with a gross 70. Craig leads by one shot over Francisco Ronnqvist and Viktor Kofod Olsen, both from Emirates Golf Club, who shot 71s.
In the Girls’ Division, Anca Mathieu (EGC), a Divisional winner in the previous year's tournament, leads after carding a 74. She is closely followed by Jamie Camero (The Els Club) and Aasiya Saleem (Jumeirah Golf Estates), both trailing by one shot.
India's Kartik Singh posted a gross score of 73, leading the net division with a 70, three shots ahead. The best gross winner will receive a package of prizes, including a Callaway Driver ‘Custom Fit’ Experience during the tournament week, an invitation to the Shubhankar Sharma Junior Invitational in India in 2024, and an invite to the Faldo Series Grand Final 2024 at Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting & Golf Club. Additional prizes are sponsored by Callaway and Odyssey.
Joe Way, Senior Executive, Event Operations, Falcon & Associates, expressed satisfaction with the competitive first round and looks forward to the closely contested leaderboard in the subsequent rounds. The second round is set to commence at 7.20 am in a two-tee start, with the leading group teeing off at 8.40 am featuring Kofod Olsen, Ronnqvist, and Craig.
