4.3°C was the cool temperature Tuesday morning at the highest peak of the UAE, Jebel Jais, the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) reported. That was the lowest temperature across the country this morning and that was at 3.15am.

In its daily weather forecast, the NCM said that the country would stay cooler for now.

Although temperatures are warm during the day in most places, it is going to be wet late at night and through Wednesday morning, it said. This moisture increase could lead to the formation of mist over some interior parts.

Mercury can get as warm as 29oC inside

Climate scientist Dr Ahmed Habib last week declared: "As of 16 December, it will see north-westerly winds along with colder air mass and a slow temperature decline. Temperatures in the UAE will decrease 5-7°C starting in the west then slowly spreading to the rest of the country.

When does winter begin?

This winter comes to an end in UAE on 22nd December. In the last 30 years, the coldest time in the country has been three days, from Jan. 16 to 18.

On the ancient Arabian Gulf calendar, there are two winter seasons of 40 days each called "Arba in Al Merei" and "Arba in Al Aqrabi". "Arba in Al Merei" starts around December 28 with shivering cold and rains.

"It’s the winter in the UAE, it starts from December 22, the temperature will drop in the months of December and January. But that will differ according to atmospheric parameters, including direction and composition of the coming air mass. Winter cold air masses will reach the interior of the country at night".

The seasoned weatherman added that two or three years ago, the centre saw dry winters in 2001-2002 like in the 2023-24 season. He said there was very little rainfall then and rain came only occasionally.

"There are a lot of factors that go into rainfall during this time (this year). The weather will usually be wetter in the winter, but it’s a matter of when that’s happening and how the weather is going," said Habib.
