Authorities announced on Tuesday that individuals getting married in Abu Dhabi will be required to undergo crucial genetic testing as part of the premarital examination program.

The Department of Health in the emirate stated that starting October 1 of this year, this will be required. After taking the test, results will be issued in 14 days, it was mentioned.

Data from 800 couples since 2022 reveals that 86 percent confirmed genetic compatibility, with the remaining 14 percent needing further intervention and a tailored family planning strategy based on their genetic findings.

The genetic test includes 570 genes linked to over 840 medical conditions and boosts the capacity to identify genetic risks or possible hereditary conditions. When preparing to have children, it is deemed crucial as a preventive step.

This exam involves discussions with medical professionals and genetic counselors, an important part of gaining a full understanding of possible risks and treatment choices.

The department reported that genetic testing and counseling services can be accessed at 22 primary healthcare centers in Abu Dhabi, Al Dhafra, and Al Ain. Partners can have genetic tests during premarital screenings to identify common mutations that could be inherited by their future offspring and lead to avoidable illnesses.

Shared genetic mutations in couples can result in their children being susceptible to various conditions like vision and hearing impairment, blood clotting issues, developmental delays, organ dysfunction, hormonal imbalances, severe seizures, and other health problems.
