The Islamic festival Eid Al Fitr will provide up to five days of holiday time for UAE residents marking the first extended break of 2025. The duration of the break will be either four or five days including the weekend based on the sighting of the Moon. Based on astronomical computations for Eid Al Fitr, officials predict a five-day holiday period.

The Islamic festival Eid Al Fitr begins on the first day of Shawwal which follows Ramadan and celebrates the conclusion of the fasting period. Hijri months in the Islamic calendar have either 29 or 30 days based on the sighting of the crescent Moon.

The moon-sighting committee of the UAE will meet on Ramadan 29 (March 29, Saturday) to search for the crescent Moon in the sky. The holy month finishes after 29 days when the crescent is viewed and Eid celebration begins on Sunday, March 30 and ends Tuesday, April 1. A four-day break happens when you include the Saturday weekend leading up to the holiday.

The holy month of Ramadan will extend to 30 days if the crescent Moon is not sighted on March 29. The 30th day of Ramadan has received official holiday status this year alongside the traditional three-day Eid celebration. The holiday period spans from March 30 (Ramadan 30) on Sunday until Wednesday April 2. Together with the preceding Saturday weekend the holiday extends to a five-day break.

Here is the good news: The Dubai Astronomy Group's astronomical calculations show that the holy month will probably have 30 days. Residents will receive five days of leave during Eid Al Fitr.

The moon-sighting committee will announce the holiday dates on March 29. The Dubai Astronomy Group urges residents to join the traditional moon sighting practice. Residents should gaze in the western horizon to spot the new crescent Moon following sunset. The use of telescopes or binoculars by residents will improve their search efforts.

The group instructed that observations of the crescent should be reported to local authorities or the official moon-sighting committee. Residents of the UAE should anticipate observing the new crescent Moon marking Eid on the evening of March 30 as Eid Al Fitr will likely begin March 31.
