An Asia Man who sold counterfeit fancy bracelets and claimed to be selling high-end bracelets, but instead he deceived a luxury retailer, had lost a case recently in a Dubai commercial court. It ordered him to pay Dh90,000 for the damages.

Driving the fraud last year, the criminal contacted the retailer at its Naif outlet, and touted three designer-brand bracelets selling for total of Dh125,000. Believing his assertions, the firm finalised the purchase — only for it to be subsequently verified through experts that the objects were fakes valued at only Dh35,000.

According to a forensic report, one of the bracelets bore a forged hallmark. Given the weight of its 18-karat gold — 41 grams — it is worth only about Dh15,000. Other two were also reported as reproductions, not associated with the luxury brands the seller had wrongly stated.

It was also determined that forensic lab tests established that the defendant had committed commercial fraud through false representations to the retailer, resulting in a financial loss. In its latest ruling, the court imposed Dh90,000 in compensation plus 5 percent interest on the scammer, to be paid to his victim.

Experts say the ruling reflects Dubai's hard position on luxury fraud. It also strengthens both government consumer protection and government image as an international trade center.
