Dubai: RTA unveils new rail bus, vehicle to carry 40 passengers per trip
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai declared on Monday that the emirate will soon launch the Rail Bus as its new public transport solution made entirely from recycled materials through 3D printing technology.
The autonomous system that runs on solar power is still being developed but promises to transform urban mobility within the emirate.
The World Government Summit 2025 at Madinat Jumeirah showcases a model of Dubai's new Rail Bus. The bus displays a bold gold and black exterior while offering two rows of orange seating and special space for disabled passengers which guarantees accessibility for everyone. Every carriage provides 22 seats while having the capacity to hold 40 passengers.
The screens above passenger seats will provide live updates on the current journey status along with stop information and weather and time details. The bus displays passenger safety instructions on both sides and features control panels at each end of the carriage.
Cost-effective, eco-friendly
The bus system will pair with existing public transportation networks through its frequent and flexible routing to create a unified mobility solution that provides seamless connections for first- and last-mile travel.
The affordable system will operate using elevated tracks planned for construction throughout the emirate. This bus achieves speeds of up to 100kmph with its 2.9-meter height and 11.5-meter length while operating solely on solar power and autonomous driving technology.
The project supports Dubai's goal to lead as the smartest city and corresponds with national strategies such as the UAE Net Zero 2050 Strategy and Dubai's Zero-Emissions Public Transport Strategy 2050 as well as the Dubai Self-Driving Transport Strategy 2030 which plans to make autonomous travel account for 25 percent of daily trips.
The Rail Bus uses a scalable lightweight 3D-printed structure to deliver maximum efficiency with minimum environmental impact. The system's launch date is not yet confirmed but it will revolutionize public transport while enhancing Dubai's position as an international model of intelligent sustainable mobility.
