Dubai: RTA's taxi-sharing service expands to include Al Maktoum Airport, World Trade Centre
Sharing the taxi ride — an option that allows more than one person to travel in the same cab and share the fare — has been extended at two new stations along the Dubai-Abu Dhabi route, it was announced on Monday by Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).
The shared taxi was launched in November last year with the route between Ibn Battuta Mall in Dubai and Al Wahda Mall in Abu Dhabi.
The service extended to two additional locations – Al Maktoum International Airport (routes to Dubai Marina Mall, Business Bay Metro Station and Palm Jumeirah - Atlantis Monorail Station) and Dubai World Trade Centre (routes to Business Bay Metro Station, Al Satwa Bus Station and Dubai Marina Mall).
The move is also in the continuation of a successful initiative last year, which had “substantial uptake from wide spectrum of the community who find it as convenient, fast and affordable mobility option."
“The shared taxi service between Ibn Battuta Mall and Al Wahda Mall has witnessed a significant increase in number of riders by 228 per cent.”
The strong take up has prompted us to roll the service out on trial basis at two more locations,” said Adel Shakri, director of Planning and Business Development, RTA Public Transport Agency.
“the goal was for fare saving for riders,” said Shakri, adding that “the project which helps in alleviating traffic congestion, as one taxi can take more than one rider.”
"This method, supporting both smoother traffic and evident environmental benefits, including the reduction of carbon emissions. It’s also enabled the law to crack down on unregistered transport.”
