AI and big data have been utilized to formulate a new system that tracks Dubai drivers’ scores relative to their accidents, fines, and black marks.

This program is currently in the testing phase, which the Roads and Transport Authority of Dubai (RTA) is planning to evaluate for public implementation in the near future.

The program aims to evaluate and improve the driving habits of ‘high risk’ drivers.

As part of integrating organizational input into the big data platform, Mohammed AlMudharreb, RTA’s Corporate Technical Support Services Sector director and CAIO, stated that a new solution has been developed integrating various inputs across the organization.

AlMudharreb further stated during the Dubai AI Week panel discussion on Monday that car insurance companies stand to benefit because of: “A driver’s Emirates ID and driving license can be put through the system which, using behavioral data alongside traffic fines, will define a risk score.”

“Scores are calculated according to three components — traffic incidents, penalties, and black marks. From these, we define the score of each driver into three levels of risk — low, medium, and high. This analysis permits us to tailor training programs to a specific subset of drivers who are statistically more prone to accidents. Stricter training regimens will statistically ameliorate the drivers’ behavior,” stated the official at the RTA kiosk while explaining the solution at the Dubai AI Week.

With the population skyrocketing and currently sitting at 3.926 million, Dubai is witnessing an enormous surge in traffic. Similarly, the Salik-registered vehicles in Dubai saw a jump, from 4.013 million in 2023 to 4.382 million in 2024.

Dubai and UAE authorities periodically launch initiatives and campaigns for the safety of drivers and pedestrians in a bid to curb accidents.

“The RTA solution has a potential for future monetization but for now it is used internally. Insurance companies could, for instance, base premiums on drivers’ behavior and this was the official’s example,” he continued and stated that this will decrease traffic violations and accidents as well.

“By offering more lessons, we can focus on certain demographics since younger people are likely to be more risky drivers. That is one of the key goals,” he stated.
