Dubai: Man sentenced to 3 years in jail, deportation over murder attempt at labour camp
Upon being convicted of attempted murder after a stabbing occurred during an argument at a labour housing unit in Dubai, Dubai Criminal Court sentenced the defendant to three years' imprisonment and a Dh50,000 fine.
On December 30, 2023, an incident involving physical violence took place in Dubai’s Al Quoz Industrial Area after an argument escalated from verbal to physical confrontation.
The court records show that two Indian nationals in shared housing consumed alcohol when an argument started after the victim insulted the accused. The accused attacked the victim while intoxicated by stabbing him in the chest and face and cutting into his abdomen.
Medical examinations verified that the victim sustained deep stab wounds which caused internal bleeding and necessitated immediate surgery. The 23-year-old accused entered the labour accommodation to create a disturbance following the stabbing incident.
The authorities took action following reports concerning the incident. Emergency personnel discovered the victim bleeding profusely on the floor and transported him to Rashid Hospital.
Police apprehended the suspect while retrieving the weapon used during the assault.
The accused during court proceedings rejected accusations of intentional murder by stating his actions stemmed from alcohol impairment and that he could not remember the complete sequence of events during the incident.
A co-worker who saw the events unfold testified that the accused was under the influence of alcohol and displayed odd behavior by laughing inexplicably.
The person who became the victim and the individual later identified as the accused were positioned together next to each other in the smoking area. A few seconds passed after I looked at my mobile phone before they started screaming and eventually he stabbed her.
Judges determined the accused guilty of drinking alcohol and creating a public disturbance under a separate legal charge.
He must serve six more months behind bars and pay a fine totaling Dh100,000.
The court ruled that he must be deported after serving his full sentence.
