Dh3 for a meal: Meet Dubai expat who serves workers at his Indian restaurant
Residents working in Dubai’s Al Muhaisnah 2 can enjoy home-cooked meals without spending excessively. Bhojpuriya Restaurant offers nourishment at a rate of Dh10 per day for three meals or Dh300 per month.
When Indian expat Lokesh Mishra started this eatery in 2020 to serve Dubai's construction workers it has since expanded its appeal to food lovers who enjoy Bhojpuri cuisine.
Mishra expressed his desire to establish a homely space for Indian labourers who often struggle to find economical home-style meals, particularly those who originate from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
Mishra began his tech career in Dubai with Siemens in 2001 and transitioned to Nokia four years later before moving to Apple where he worked across multiple countries including the UK and Middle East. Because of his corporate achievements Mishra returned to his childhood aspiration of starting a restaurant driven by his love for food and service.
Mishra manages to run his restaurant offering three meals a day at Dh10 through the power of high volume sales. Serving hundreds of customers daily helps balance the restaurant's profit margins.
Bhojpuriya launched its doors just before the Covid-19 pandemic necessitated the closure of its dining area. Mishra launched a tiffin delivery service to make sure workers continued to have access to fresh meals. These meals reached customers as early as 4am and became a crucial support system for many people.
The pandemic demonstrated the importance of reliability according to Mishra. The tiffin service gained popularity because meals cost just over Dh3 each while offering both affordable pricing and timely delivery. The restaurant maintained its operations and developed a dedicated group of regular customers.
The menu showcases the traditional dishes of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. The menu features litti chokha which consists of roasted wheat balls packed with spiced gram flour served alongside a mashed vegetable mixture as well as sattu which is a traditional drink made from roasted gram flour recognized for its health benefits. Classics such as daal bhaat and biryanis deliver dependable and soothing tastes.
Originally meant for workers the restaurant attracts a diverse group of customers including enthusiasts of Bhojpuri cuisine. Mishra considers his 15 Bhojpuriya employees like family members.
